Iceberg Monitoring

Ship/Iceberg Monitoring for the Grand Banks

The Ship and Iceberg Monitoring Service provides near real-time (NRT) detection of ships and icebergs using satellite Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery. The service supports safe shipping and offshore operations in the Grand Banks region off the East Coast of Newfoundland and Labrador. The Polar View Iceberg Detection Service offers a 24-hour NRT service using Envisat Alternating Polarization (HH/HV) data. Iceberg detections are provided through email using a customized file format. This format is ingested by the users of the service to develop products based on their mandate. Data is also made available through a customized web site.

The organizations using this service include the International Ice Patrol (IIP), Canadian Ice Services (CIS) and Provincial Aerospace Ltd. Environmental Service Division (PAL ESD). The mandate of the IIP and CIS are to provide iceberg information to the maritime community. The IIP generally report on iceberg activity south of 50°N, while the CIS report activity north of 50°N. PAL ESD provides ice and environmental services to the oil and gas companies in the Grand Bank region.

IcebergFinder.Com

Hospitality Newfoundland and Labrador, C-CORE, in conjunction with the Canadian Space Agency and the European Space Agency, Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, have partnered in a project utilizing satellite imaging and technology to locate icebergs off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador.

The website illustrates the location of icebergs along the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador using real-time satellite radar data. The website is geared toward local communities, visitors and tourism operators in the province. It also provides the local community and tourists with knowledge of iceberg locations throughout the province, provide historical information for visitors planning trips to the province and provide educational information about icebergs and satellite radar.

Iceberg data is provided by the Polar View Iceberg Detection Service. This is a 24-hour NRT service using Radarsat Fine mode and Envisat Alternating Polarization (HH/HV) mode data. Iceberg detections are provided through ftp upload using a customized file format. This format is automatically ingested and posted using the Google maps server on the web site.

Iceberg Population Survey

The Iceberg Population Survey provides population statistics of icebergs using satellite Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery. Statistics are collected in the Davis Strait and Hudson Strait region in Canada. Statistics collected in these regions can be used along with other weather data to forecast the severity of the coming iceberg season on the Grand Banks of Newfoundland, Canada. This service uses Envisat Alternating Polarization (HH/HV) data, RADARSAT-1 Wide and RADARSAT-1 ScanSAR Narrow data. Iceberg detections are provided through email using a customized file format. A post analysis of all data is performed and a statistical summary of the iceberg population is provided. Data is also made available through a customized web site. These data are used by the client to develop a forecast for the coming iceberg season.

The organizations using this service include the Canadian Ice Services (CIS) and Provincial Aerospace Ltd. Environmental Service Division (PAL ESD). The mandate of the CIS is to provide iceberg information to the maritime community. PAL ESD provides ice and environmental services to the oil and gas companies in the Grand Bank region.

Iceberg Monitoring for the Antarctica Cup Ocean Race

The Antarctica Cup Yacht Race is in its inaugural year and is the first race around the continent of Antarctica. A single solo racer is participating in an 85 foot yacht that is normally manned by a crew of 10-15. In addition to the highest sustained winds in the world, there are iceberg dangers throughout the race.

The Polar View service is used to provide iceberg detection services for the South Atlantic and a portion of the South Pacific. Coverage of the large extent is facilitated through the use of Envisat Wide Swath data. Data products are delivered in the form of an e-mail text file and graphical display on a customized map posted on a website. The race consists of a number of sectors and iceberg detection data delivery is just prior to the racer entering each sector.
